My new goals...

So, after talking with some friends that also coupon, I have decided that I need to be a little better in what I purchase. I need to be a little more healthy conscious. I will admit it is hard not to get the "junk" food that is practically free, but I also want my little girl (and us adults as well) to learn healthy eating habits. I was sent to a blog Deals to Meals and find that she price matches all at Walmart (which I'm not a fan of) but gets everything in one store and makes healthy meals. She is also rotating and adding to her food storage. This is my goal. I am still spending way more than I need too and I need to get back to the basics. I guess now I am accountable!!

  1. Thanks for this tip, Annalee! This website really is helpful. I'm trying her free 2-week trial period, and I've been impressed so far. I was worried that her recipes may be too simple and repetitive(or too complex and time consuming) or outrageously expensive as far as ingredients. I have been pleasantly surprised to find that most of the ingredients I already have in my growing food storage, items I have already purchased from caselot sales and good deals I have frozen or stored up on the shelf.
She adds in a great assortment of spices and fresh items for health and deliciousness. :) Most of the items I don't have are on sale (she chooses recipes that incorporate sale items). Her format is extremely easy to use, and she points out food storage items to stock up on even if they are not in the week's recipes. I'm excited to see how the two weeks go... I'm doing my first shopping trip today!

I suffer from the conflicted Walmart shopper syndrome. I feel Walmart is a problematic monopoly that hurts local economies (especially in small towns) and doesn't treat their employees fairly. However, it's so hard to eat healthy on a fixed budget. I could run all over town to get the best deals, but I find that very difficult with a baby in tow. When I can, I shop at farmer's markets and at local stores that have a lot of great sales going on. But, forgive me Annalee, I am going to try out the Deals to Meals method of price matching today. :)

  2. My Deals to Meals debut went very well. I tried out one of the recipes before I even went shopping because I had most of the ingredients and substituted or omitted the rest. It was delicious (a Rumbi Island Grill salad recipe). The ingredients for this week were very reasonable. I saved a boat load on fresh items by price matching, and I was even able to use a few coupons to complement my purchases (the cheese coupons are my favorite: YAY!). I spent about $38, but many of the costly items were spices that will last me a very long time. Also, the chicken I bought will last a few weeks and the cheese will last a month or so. I still want to go back and hit some of the caselot items, like tomato paste, applesauce, and green chiles (things I don't have already). There are A LOT of good food storage items this week. (she said it was a record for great food storage prices) If you need to stock up on canned goods, you might want to at least do the two week trial and get the shopping list.

    Good luck and have fun!
